Dublin Airport's traffic and tourism growth are supported by a high court ruling for the summer of 2025.
The Irish High Court's decision to send the legal validity of the Dublin Airport traffic cap to the EU Court of Justice has been endorsed by Ryanair, the country's biggest airline. Despite Dublin Airport's dual-runway infrastructure and capacity for up to 60 million passengers annually, the airline feels that this restriction on passenger numbers violates EU legislation governing free movement. Ryanair expressed disapproval of the situation, blaming the protracted legal struggle on Green Transport Minister Eamon Ryan's failure to put aviation expansion ahead of antiquated planning constraints that were first put in place because of irrelevant road traffic concerns.
Ryanair can proceed with its intentions to increase operations at Dublin Airport in the summer of 2025 thanks to its referral to the European Court. The airline plans to use its quieter, fuel-efficient B737 Gamechanger aircraft to take advantage of the Dublin Airport Authority's (DAA) new environmental incentive program. To increase passenger traffic and tourism, Ryanair plans to expand by adding new routes and raising the frequencies of its current ones.

The airline also cited the recent Irish voters' rejection of the Green Party in favour of the parties Fianna Fáil (FF) and Fine Gael (FG), who have pledged to do away with the airport traffic cap. Ryanair is still hopeful that the incoming administration will keep its promise to lift these limitations as soon as possible in early 2025, allowing Dublin Airport to realise its full potential as a hub for economic growth and connectivity.
Michael O'Leary, CEO of Ryanair, stated:
Ryanair is now able to increase traffic and tourism with new, more efficient, quieter jets and cheaper fares thanks to today's referral of the ridiculous Dublin Airport Cap to the EU Court of Justice, which suspends the cap for the summer of 2025. If our new Green Transport Minister Eamon Ryan had simply done his job, this wouldn't have been required.

We applaud the triumph of the parties that vowed to remove this foolish and damaging traffic cap in the most recent election. Irish voters want more jobs, tourism, and traffic. They want fewer unsuccessful Green Party inactivity and stagnation, as well as more affordable fares. For Dublin and Ireland to benefit from the growth advantages that Dublin's new second runway can now provide for Irish tourists, Irish jobs, and Irish residents, we urge the new FF/FG Government to accelerate legislation in the upcoming Dáil term to repeal this antiquated 2007 traffic cap. Goodbye to the Green Party, who utterly failed to provide growth or aviation answers for a European island.
