Ryanair is mourning the loss of two young pilots, Matt Greenhalgh, 28, and Jamie Fernandes, 24, who tragically died in a motorway crash while on their way to work. The accident occurred on the M62 motorway in Cheshire just after 5:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The pilots were en route to Liverpool John Lennon Airport when their taxi was involved in a collision with two lorries on the westbound carriageway between junction eight and junction seven, near St Helens. Despite the prompt arrival of emergency services, both men were pronounced dead at the scene. Their next of kin are being supported by specialist officers from Cheshire Police.
The driver of the taxi sustained serious injuries and remains in hospital receiving treatment. The cause of the collision is currently under investigation.
Ryanair employees have been deeply affected by the sudden loss of their colleagues. Jayne Smith, a Ryanair cabin service supervisor from Liverpool, expressed her sorrow, describing the deaths as “absolutely devastating.” Many employees have shown their respect and solidarity by changing their social media profile pictures to a blacked-out Ryanair logo in memory of the deceased pilots.
Matt Greenhalgh and Jamie Fernandes were both passionate and dedicated pilots. According to his LinkedIn profile, Jamie Fernandes had recently been promoted to the position of first officer at Ryanair in May. His career began after studying at Buckinghamshire New University and the independent Bolton School, followed by earning his pilot’s license from the Quebec-based company CAE.
The aviation community and beyond have rallied to offer their condolences and support to the families and friends of the two pilots. The outpouring of tributes underscores the high regard in which both men were held and the significant impact of their loss.
