The Irish Airline Pilots’ Association (Ialpa) officials have agreed to recommend that Aer Lingus members vote in favor of the Labour Court-brokered deal. This agreement has led to the immediate suspension of the work-to-rule action, which had caused severe disruptions, affecting the travel plans of almost 86,000 passengers over recent weeks.
The union's decision to lift the industrial action came after they sought and received crucial confirmations from the Labour Court regarding key aspects of the deal. Additionally, Aer Lingus provided further clarifications on concerns raised by union officials, ensuring that all parties had a comprehensive understanding of the agreement.
"Following the communication from the Labour Court today (Wednesday) and further clarification from Aer Lingus, Ilapa has met and passed a motion to recommend acceptance of the Labour Court’s recommendation," said a statement from Ialpa.
The industrial action began as pilots expressed dissatisfaction with their pay and working conditions. The work-to-rule, a form of industrial action where employees do no more than the minimum required by the rules of their contract, led to significant disruptions in Aer Lingus operations. This resulted in numerous flight cancellations and delays, causing inconvenience and frustration for passengers.
Although the industrial action has been lifted, Aer Lingus has announced that some flights will remain cancelled into early next week. The airline is working to restore normal operations but has warned passengers to expect continued disruptions in the short term.
Ialpa's decision to recommend the Labour Court's proposal came after an intense period of negotiations. Initially, the union had adjourned a meeting on the proposal, awaiting further clarification from Aer Lingus and the Labour Court. These clarifications addressed the union’s concerns, leading to their endorsement of the deal.
Barry O'Halloran, an aviation analyst, noted the importance of this resolution for the future stability of Aer Lingus operations. "This agreement is crucial not only for the immediate resumption of regular flight schedules but also for the long-term relationship between Aer Lingus management and its pilots," he said.
As operations gradually return to normal, Aer Lingus has committed to minimizing further disruptions and rescheduling affected flights as promptly as possible. The airline has also expressed its gratitude to passengers for their patience during this challenging period.

The 17.75% pay rise is a substantial increase, aimed at addressing long-standing concerns over pilot remuneration and working conditions. The deal also includes provisions for improved working conditions and other benefits.

The Labour Court played a pivotal role in mediating the negotiations and crafting a proposal that addressed the concerns of both Aer Lingus and Ialpa.
This agreement may set a precedent for future negotiations between the airline and its employees, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and mediation in resolving industrial disputes.
This resolution marks a significant step forward for Aer Lingus and its pilots, aiming to ensure stability and satisfaction for both employees and passengers moving forward.
