The airplane took off from Sofia and was on its way to Ireland Wednesday night when the tragedy occurred under harsh weather conditions.

It is reported that the flight was first delayed before departing for the Irish capital.

However, according to a passenger, less than 10 minutes into the trip, the jet was hit by lightning amid bad weather, leaving passengers scared.

"People were screaming, and there was a lot of turbulence," the insider explained.

"It was a really terrifying experience."

It is reported that the jet was subsequently redirected to Bucharest, Romania, where passengers had to wait overnight while the aircraft was serviced.

The aircraft departed Thursday morning and touched down in Dublin Thursday afternoon.

Ryanair expressed regret in a statement for any disruption the event may have caused to its customers, but it stated it was "beyond our control."

A representative informed the Press that "this flight from Sofia to Dublin (26 June) diverted to Bucharest after the aircraft encountered a lightning strike."

"The plane touched down in Bucharest at 03:15 local time, the passengers disembarked, and our engineers inspected it before approving its return to service later that same morning.

Passengers that were impacted were informed and kept informed by push, SMS, and email.

"Passengers were advised that they could also arrange individual accommodation and transport to/from the airport and that they could claim back expenses on Ryanair.com," the statement continued, "despite Ryanair's efforts to arrange accommodation and transport to/from the airport for passengers while the aircraft was being serviced, there were limited staff available at the airport due to the late hour."

Later on June 27, the airplane took off for Dublin, landing there at 3:15 p.m. local time.
