Aer Lingus strikes continue as negotiations with pilots over a salary dispute break down due to "no mandate" to discuss "essential items."

Since pilots began industrial action in a disagreement over compensation, some 270 flights have been canceled, raising fears about future flights.

Frustrated travelers are having to deal with additional flight cancellations as a result of the management and rival Aer Lingus pilots' impasse.

In an attempt to break the impasse that will see pilots go on strike for eight hours on Saturday, airline executives met with representatives of the pilot union on Thursday.

After the meeting at a hotel near Dublin airport between the management of Aer Lingus and the pilots' union, IALPA, three teams from each side raised hopes that a deal may be reached.

However, as the negotiations broke down in a furious exchange of words, anxious travelers are now dealing with even greater uncertainty, and the IALPA is already thinking of intensifying labor unrest.

Aer Lingus was chastised by IALPA President Mark Tighe for standing by its offer of a 12.25 percent salary raise.
"At this point, talks have broken down," Tighe remarked.

"Both parties agreed to enable a smaller group to meet in order to try to reach some kind of compromise.
"IALPA formally departed from its 23.88 percent inflation rate. The business has not changed its position that pilots' personal contributions through work practices would have to cover any portion above 12.25 percent.

Donal Moriarty, the chief corporate affairs officer of Aer Lingus, responded angrily to the union, stating that the airline "engaged constructively" in talks.
"We tried to discuss items that could actually resolve this dispute," he stated, mentioning productivity, flexibility, and modernizing our collective bargaining agreement in particular.
"All items that we believe are necessary to increase the 12.25 percent agreed upon with all other collectively bargained groups, including an increase for pilots, and to reach a pay deal with IALPA."We think it's crucial to talk about those things.

Regretfully, IALPA was unable to have conversations about such topics. It actually said that it was not required to do so. We gave the IALPA advice and pushed them to review that directive so they could take control of the standard wage negotiating process.
Pilots are preparing for an eight-hour strike on Saturday in addition to starting an indefinite work-to-rule on Wednesday.

Due to the industrial action, Aer Lingus has canceled 270 flights so far, which has affected thousands of passengers' travel schedules.
The dispute between Aer Lingus pilots and management needs to be resolved, according to Peter Burke, Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment.
As a minister, Burke expressed his extreme worry for the travel plans of all the families throughout our economy who truly need predictability, as well as for the tourist and SME sectors.
"We must simplify the situation, move the talks along quickly, and find a real solution."
