Hydraulic leak was spotted during United Airlines Boeing 777-300ER's takeoff for San Francisco

Due to a mechanical issue, a United Airlines flight had to return to Sydney.

After one hour and fifty-two minutes of flight, United Airlines flight #UA830 to San Francisco was forced to return to Sydney.

A six-year-old Boeing 777-300ER with registration N2140U piloted the flight.

When a fluid began to leak from the right hand main gear, the aircraft took off from runway 34L.

As soon as it was airborne, it lost hydraulic pressure and had to retract.

After ascending to 30,000 feet, flight #UA830 was forced to abort and made a safe landing nearly two hours later.

An army of firefighters and police met the aircraft as it returned to Sydney. When the aircraft got closer, it was possible to see that the landing gear compartment doors were wide open and that smoke was emanating from one of the tyres on the right side.

Despite the problem being there at takeoff, it seems that the crew was not warned until much later in the cruise.
