F-16 fighter jets scrambled after two flights to Norway receive bomb threats

Flights operated by Scandinavian Airlines and Norwegian Airlines were instructed to return right away after takeoff from Copenhagen.

Following bomb threats, two commercial aircraft that were flying from Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, to Stavanger, Norway, were forced to return to Copenhagen airport late on Thursday, March 21, 2024.

First to take off was SAS flight SK1874, which lasted for an hour. However, when the Canadair CL-600 (registration EI-FPR) was making its final approach to Stavanger, it had to fly back up to 34,000 feet due to a bomb threat that the authorities had received.

According to the police, the SAS plane was escorted by two F-16 fighter jets as part of a standard security procedure.

About 30 minutes later, Norwegian flight DY971 took off from Copenhagen but pilots were informed of the situation right after takeoff.

The Boeing 737-800 (registration LN-NGM) immediately returned to Copenhagen only 24 minutes later.

The airlines confirmed to Norwegian broadcaster NRK that all passengers were evacuated upon landing.

Police and emergency services were still searching the planes at 9.25 p.m. local time.
