Delta Air Lines' Airbus A330-900 returns to Salt Lake City Airport Following the removal of the engine panel

One of the engine's pylon panels blew off a Delta Air Lines Airbus A330neo that was operating flight DL56 between Salt Lake City and Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The aircraft was forced to return to its original location and touched down there safely a few hours later.

Engine panel loss in midair

As per the data available on the FAA's Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS) system, on March 24, 2024, the Airbus A330-900 registered as N405DX experienced the loss of an engine pylon panel from its left-hand engine, which is the number one engine.

According to the report, during takeoff, the panel separated. At 16:45 local time (UTC -6), the aircraft took off from Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) and was operating flight DL56 to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS).

According to air traffic control (ATC) data from LiveATC.net archives, at approximately 16:45, a local controller approved the aircraft to fly at a normal speed and an altitude of 12,000 feet (3657 metres).

Returning to SLC

As it departed SLC, the Airbus A330-900 kept ascending, reaching a maximum altitude of 35,000 feet (10,668 metres). But at 17:53, the widebody jet started to descend to SLC and turn around. Throughout the whole flight, the flight crew never issued the code 7700, which is for a general emergency onboard.

According to Flightradar24 data, the A330-900 has not been scheduled for any flights since arrival at SLC. There has also been a cancellation of its planned schedule from AMS to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York. Records from the flight-tracking website indicated that the aircraft touched down at SLC at 19:29. A replacement aircraft, an Airbus A330-900 registered as N419DX, was dispatched by Delta Air Lines to fly the route between SLC and AMS under the unique flight number DL9906. The plane took off from SLC at 15:12 and touched down in the Dutch city on March 25, 2024, at 7:20 (UTC +1).

Delta Air Lines was compelled to use the same replacement aircraft for the Airbus A330-900, which had an engine pylon panel failure, on the flight between SLC and AMS as well as the subsequent route between AMS and JFK. N419DX is scheduled to operate the flight, which has the code DL9927, and it is expected to depart at 7:30.
