Smoke and flames as United Airlines Boeing 737 makes an emergency landing in Kansas

After diverting to ICT on December 14, United Airlines' Boeing 737-900ER has remained at the airport ever since.

An engine failure occurred on a United Airlines Boeing 737-900ER, registered as N62892, forcing it to deviate from its intended course while traveling between Denver International Airport (DEN) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). On December 14, 2023, flight UA551 was rerouted to Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT).

Engine failure of the 737-900ER

The airport issued a statement stating that the Boeing 737-900ER was diverted to ICT "due to an engine out situation."

A "post landing engine fire was quickly brought under control by airport police and fire with no additional damages, no injuries" occurred to the aircraft, which had 199 passengers on board.

Since the incident, the aircraft has remained on the ground. The 737-900ER operating flight UA1988 between Cancun International Airport (CUN) and EWR before it left the New York area airport to fly to DEN was the subject flight, which was its second itinerary of the day.

Coincidentally, on December 13, an Airbus A319 registered as N809UA, another United Airlines aircraft, was also forced to divert to the airport. Regarding this incident, the airport has not released a statement; however,

A local media outlet, KSNW, reports that the crew reported a burning smell inside the cockpit, leading to the A319's landing at ICT. Between Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and Tucson International Airport (TUS), the aircraft was flying flight UA531. The A319 departed for DEN on December 14, a few hours before the 737-900ER was diverted to ICT.

Twelve United First (first class), 78 United Economy (economy class), and United Economy Plus (premium economy) seats are available inside United Airlines' Airbus A319s, which are set up in a three-class cabin.

As a result, the passengers who became stranded could not have been carried to their destination by the aircraft. Another Boeing 737-900ER, registered as N61886, was involved in flight UA1436 from DEN to ICT.

It landed at the latter location on December 15 at approximately 19:00, according to ADS-B Exchange data. It took off from ICT a few hours later and returned to DEN on flight UA551, which is the flight code usually used for flights between EWR and DEN.
