Lightning Strike Forces American Airlines Boeing 787 to Make Emergency Landing

The incident happened on Christmas Eve

Shortly after takeoff, a lightning strike forced an American Airlines flight from Argentina to the US to return to the airport. Even though modern jetliners are designed to withstand lightning strikes, structural damage can still occur and additional inspection is necessary.

Flight heads back to the Airport

Not long after takeoff, a lightning strike forced an American Airlines flight from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Miami, Florida, to return to the airport.

At 23:34, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner took off from Ministro Pistarini International Airport almost exactly as scheduled; however, the plane had to make a turn shortly after takeoff.

The Argentinean National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC) was also involved in the Christmas Eve incident to make sure the plane landed safely. 33 minutes after takeoff, the 787 returned to the airport after having to dump some fuel to stay under the maximum landing weight restriction, according to BNN Breaking.

The aircraft involved in the incident, according to ch-aviation, is a Boeing 787-8 registered N808AN, which is 8.4 years old. It was delivered to American Airlines in August 2015, and as of August 2023, it has accumulated slightly over 29,000 flight hours.

As of this writing, Flightradar24 reports that it is still in Buenos Aires and is expected to take off on December 26 at 13:00.
