Before the landing, the aircraft was having issues, but it's not clear when the fire started, an airport representative told ABC affiliate WLOS
A wing was broken off and thrown away from the burning pile, according to reporters who were at the scene, and the plane's remains were described as "unrecognizable".
"Looking at this damage, it's hard to imagine how anyone could survive," WLOS' Marc Liverman stated in a live stream.
However, the first responders on the scene reported that the passengers seemed to be in good health.
According to Buncombe County's on-duty EMS supervisor Allen Morgan, "there does not appear to be any life-threatening injuries," as reported to the Citizen-Times.
Reporters also mentioned a brief loss of power, which they said might have been caused by powerlines that were damaged in the collision.
Skyland Fire and Rescue, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and the local police were assisted at the scene by a fire truck.
The Department of Transportation in North Carolina has announced that the interstate will remain closed indefinitely.
Officials were searching for alternate routes for drivers while traffic was at a standstill.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are looking into what caused the crash.
