Bamboo Airways analyses its fleet strategy after going through a financial restructuring.

Vietnam's Bamboo Airways, which is currently going through a financial restructuring process, has stated that it already has plans to add several new aircraft to its fleet in the upcoming years.

From its home base at Hanoi Hoi Bai International Airport (HAN), the privately owned airline is already planning its return to the Vietnamese domestic and regional markets with the addition of additional narrowbody aircraft, after a turbulent few months during which it said goodbye to its long-haul services along with its trio of Boeing 787-9s.

The airline is optimistic about its future even though it has said goodbye to 16 more aircraft from its fleet (in addition to its 787s) since the end of October 2023 because lessors have reclaimed the aircraft that the carrier had leased.

According to Luong Hoai Nam, the airline's recently appointed director general, the carrier will resume operating 30 aircraft in three to four years. Shortly, he anticipates Bamboo Airways to become an all-Airbus airline for the foreseeable future and hopes to see the reorganized airline flying about 18 aircraft by the end of 2024.

Presently, the airline operates a significantly smaller fleet consisting of two Airbus A320s, four A320neos, four A321neos, and five smaller Embraer ERJ-190-100LR aircraft.

In addition, the airline recently canceled all of its contracts with foreign pilots and cut payroll expenses by about 60%.

The airline has also declared that starting on January 1, 2024, it will lease two more A320 family aircraft to add 20% more capacity for the upcoming New Year's and Têt (Vietnamese New Year) travel peak. To accommodate demand during the next travel peak, the carrier confirmed that it has procured one leased A320-200 as well as an A321-200 from an unidentified lessor.

The airline has been focusing on increasing its commercial efficiency while going through a financial restructuring. While increasing services on routes with high demand, it has been cutting frequencies on several ineffective routes with low passenger demands.

The three Boeing 787-9s that the airline had previously leased are now all owned by leasing company CALC, which is actively reselling the aircraft to other potential airlines. The aircraft could accommodate 294 passengers in total when configured as a Bamboo Airways, with 26 seats in business class, 21 seats in premium economy, and 247 seats in economy.
