Violent protests in Dublin after Knife attack leaves five people injured

A knife attack in Dublin's city center has left three people injured, including a five-year-old girl and a lady in her 30s who both suffered serious injuries.

Shortly after 1:40 PM local time, a five-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl were stabbed outside the children's school on Parnell Square East.

After large groups of demonstrators gathered in the neighborhood, there were violent situations close to the violent scenes.

According to authorities, a man in his 40s is someone of interest.

He's receiving treatment for severe wounds. According to the police, they are pursuing a specific line of investigation and are not currently looking for any other people.

Following the attack, protesters gathered in the neighbourhood, which sparked altercations with police who brandished batons and riot shields.

Three different vehicles—a bus, a tram, and an automobile—have all been set on fire.

While other establishments' windows were broken, a shop on O'Connell Street was plundered.

Due to the disturbances, Trinity College, which is located nearby in the city centre, has closed all of its campus's gates and is under lockdown.

Leo Varadkar, Taoiseach (prime minister), announced the deployment of additional police resources.

Police Commissioner Drew Harris attributed the violence to a group of "lunatic, hooligan faction" members who carried out violent acts as law enforcement was attempting to preserve the crime scene.

"We ask people to act responsibly, not to listen to misinformation and rumour that is circulating on social media," he stated to reporters.

"We know what happened, but the motive for this is entirely unclear."

"On its own," an attack

The girl is receiving emergency care in a hospital, according to Supt Liam Geraghty, who made this announcement earlier at a press conference. A five-year-old boy and another girl were less gravely injured.

Despite the early stages of the investigation, he continued, gardaí are certain that there is "no terror-related activity" and that it seems to be a "standalone attack".

The incident "shocked" Mr. Varadkar, who said that "the facts in this matter are still emerging".

According to the police, the incident took place outside Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire, the children's school.

"Our hearts are with the entire school community of Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire following the horrifying incident that has taken place today," the Irish National Teachers' Organisation (INTO) stated.

"We are thinking of the children, their families and the school's staff during this unimaginably difficult time."
