United Airlines' Airbus A320 Suffers Its Second Left Engine Failure this week

Following an engine failure on Wednesday, United Airlines flight 520, which was headed from Denver, Colorado, to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was forced to return. After taking off at 15:08 from Denver International Airport (DEN), UA520 returned in just 20 minutes.

From DEN, the aircraft took off on runway 34L. The crew reported that a compressor stall had occurred on the left-hand engine during the climb out. After that, the plane decelerated, leveled off at 10,000 feet, and headed back to the airport.

After being transferred to a different aircraft, the passengers arrived Sioux Falls three and a half hours later.

The details

The aircraft, which has the serial number 589 and is registered as N433UA, is not a new addition to the sky; in April 1996, it carried out its first test flight. It has a long history with United, having started service with the Chicago-based airline on June 3rd, 1996. Prior to joining the UA mainline fleet again, the aircraft flew a brief assignment under the low-cost carrier TED between February 2004 and January 2009.

The aircraft is equipped with two International Aero Engines (IAE) of type V2527-A5 and can accommodate 138 passengers in economy and 12 in business class.

Flightradar24 data indicates that the aircraft, registered as UA520, was supposed to take off on November 22 at 13:30, but it was delayed by over an hour, ultimately taking off from Denver at 15:08. As previously mentioned, the flight from runway 34L proceeded without incident until the crew reported that the compressor had stalled.

After just twenty minutes, the plane returned to the airport safely, offloaded its passengers and crew, and passengers were placed on another A320, registered N478UA. After continuing, the flight took off at 17:26 and traveled for an hour and six minutes before landing at Sioux Falls at 19:32.

A few days prior, N433UA experienced a similar scenario while departing Newark on a Chicago-bound flight.
