Emirates has launched its first flights from Dubai International Airport (DXB) using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), supplied by Shell Aviation.
On October 24, 2023, Emirates flight EK 412 from DXB to Sydney, Australia, was one of the first planes to take off using SAF from Shell Aviation.
The airline's hub in Dubai will get 315,000 gallons of blended SAF from Shell, which has been used on several flights in the past few weeks.
Shell provided blended superfine fuel (SAF) to the DXB airport fueling system. This fuel was 40% neat SAF and 60% conventional Jet A-1 fuel.
The "chemical characteristics at this ratio are identical to conventional jet fuel and can seamlessly be integrated into the existing airport fuel infrastructure as well as in the engines of the entire Emirates fleet with no modifications required," according to an official statement from Emirates.
When compared to traditional jet fuel, SAF, in its tidy state, lowers greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 80% over the course of its life cycle.
"We're moving forward with proactive efforts to enable more sustainable flying both now and in the future. One of the actions we've taken to decrease emissions and specifically assist our customers in minimizing their own carbon footprint is powering flights from our Dubai base.
