Emirates, powered by Shell Aviation SAF, completes its first flight from Dubai.

Emirates has launched its first flights from Dubai International Airport (DXB) using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), supplied by Shell Aviation.

On October 24, 2023, Emirates flight EK 412 from DXB to Sydney, Australia, was one of the first planes to take off using SAF from Shell Aviation.

The airline's hub in Dubai will get 315,000 gallons of blended SAF from Shell, which has been used on several flights in the past few weeks.

Shell provided blended superfine fuel (SAF) to the DXB airport fueling system. This fuel was 40% neat SAF and 60% conventional Jet A-1 fuel.

The "chemical characteristics at this ratio are identical to conventional jet fuel and can seamlessly be integrated into the existing airport fuel infrastructure as well as in the engines of the entire Emirates fleet with no modifications required," according to an official statement from Emirates.

When compared to traditional jet fuel, SAF, in its tidy state, lowers greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 80% over the course of its life cycle.

"We're moving forward with proactive efforts to enable more sustainable flying both now and in the future. One of the actions we've taken to decrease emissions and specifically assist our customers in minimizing their own carbon footprint is powering flights from our Dubai base.

The president of Emirates Airlines, Sir Tim Clark, stated, "We still have a long way to go, but we hope that our partnership with Shell Aviation inspires more producers to address the supply gaps and make SAF readily available in major hubs like Dubai, as well as other points on our network."

Emirates and Shell inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) earlier this year to investigate potential areas of cooperation around environmentally friendly travel and technologically advanced travel experiences.

The UAE and Shell have a long history of working together, and we are excited to carry on this path to make SAF usage possible in the UAE.

This historic first-ever SAF supply to Emirates in Dubai serves as an illustration of what happens when various aviation value chain components work together. We anticipate that this accomplishment will spur additional progress in the SAF implementation across the aviation sector in the United Arab Emirates and the surrounding area. Shell Aviation President Jan Toschka stated.

In January 2023, Emirates conducted the first demonstration flight powered exclusively by SAF in the region.

The airline started employing SAF on a Chicago route in 2017, and since then, blended SAF has also been used on flights from Stockholm, Paris, Lyon, and Oslo.
