British Airways Boeing 777  Returns To London Heathrow After Smoke On Board

A British Airways flight headed for Doha was forced to return a few minutes after takeoff due to smoke detected in the cabin by the crew. When it was decided to turn back, BA123, a Boeing 777-200 operated by one of the airlines, had only risen to 5,000 feet.

On November 24th, BA123 took off from runway 27R at London Heathrow International Airport, heading for the Middle East. After about seven minutes of flight, the crew made the decision to return to the BA base, passing over Croydon and turning above Oxshott before making its approach above Ebbsfleet.

Twenty minutes after takeoff, the plane touched down safely at the busiest airport in the United Kingdom (27L).

After the aircraft touched down on firm ground, the maintenance team examined it and the crew and passengers were transferred to a different flight.

The details

British Airways intended to use its Boeing 777-200ER fleet to provide daily service between London Heathrow International Airport (LHR) and Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH). The flight BA123 was supposed to take off from London Heathrow Airport at 14:05, but it didn't leave until 15:13, one hour and eight minutes later than planned.

With a scheduled arrival time of 00:15, the passengers on board had anticipated traveling southeast for the customary six-hour flight to Qatar.

The crew decided to return to LHR for additional inspection after smoke was reported in the cabin, and they landed back at Heathrow at approximately 15:33. Emergency services met the aircraft upon arrival and got right to work looking into the incident.

At the heart of the drama is a Boeing 777-200ER, registered G-YMMI and with serial number 30310, which is 23 years old. October 2000 saw the aircraft's first test flight, and in November it was delivered to the world carrier. There are three cabins available to passengers on this flight: 48 seats in business class, 40 seats in premium economy, and 184 seats in economy.
