Police at Manchester Airport have rebuffed a bomb threat made against an Emirates Airbus A380. (MAN)
The UK airport was temporarily closed on October 17, 2023, while the superjumbo aircraft on the airstrip was being isolated by Greater Manchester Police (GMP).
Police claim to have received information about a "email claiming there was a suspicious package on a flight" that was coming from the United Arab Emirates.
Emergency vehicles encircled the Airbus A380 when aircraft EK19 touched down at Manchester Airport at 7:22 p.m. local time, allowing for additional examination to be completed.
GMP later in the evening verified that the flight's security procedures had been carried out and that no suspicious objects had been discovered.
"This evening, Tuesday, October 17, at approximately 7:20 p.m., Greater Manchester Police received an email indicating that a suspicious package was on an aircraft. The plane touched down at Manchester Airport and was detained pending more examination. No suspicious materials have been discovered thus far after searches and security checks were carried out, according to a statement from GMP.
"Passengers have now disembarked the aircraft with additional officers on hand to answer any questions and offer visible reassurance," the statement continued. As of now, no one has been taken into custody.
Emirates also stated that because of the bomb threat, there were extra security checks when the plane arrived in Manchester.
"Emirates crew and ground teams co-operated fully with the authorities," an Emirates representative stated. Following the aircraft's clearance by local authorities, it arrived at the gate where passengers disembarked in the usual manner.
