British Airways passengers were forced to leave after "unknown fumes" filled the aircraft

A British Airways flight from Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) to London-Heathrow Airport (LHR) was abruptly evacuated due to "unknown fumes" that filled the cabin.

On October 8, 2023, at about 16:15 local time, flight BA 475 touched down at Heathrow's Terminal 5. Emergency personnel awaited the aircraft on the tarmac.

Several fire trucks and police cars were seen on the runway while passengers waited outside the aircraft in video footage of the incident that was captured by one of the passengers.

A passenger initially stated in his post that he was trapped on a plane with a "potential contagion," but he afterward emphasized that there was absolutely no contagion.

Another passenger tweeted photos and stated that the only information given was that fumes had been found in the cockpit and that some cabin crew had been instructed to strip off after becoming ill.

There was a "suspected chemical leak" on the airplane, according to another passenger who shared a video of the evacuation online.

While the London Ambulance Service said it deployed a hazardous area response team and three doctors, the London Fire Brigade told the Daily Mail that no abnormal chemical readings had been found inside the aircraft.

Terminal 4 was shut down

In a different, more recent event, a man activated emergency alarm on October 9, 2023, forcing the temporary evacuation of Terminal 4 at London Heathrow.

According to a Metropolitan Police official who talked to the local media outlet MyLondon, the interruption was caused by an aggressive customer who caused a disturbance on a train headed to Heathrow.

The train passenger then turned on the manual call alarms at the Heathrow Elizabeth line station. Since then, the station and terminal have reopened, and the passenger has been taken into custody.
