On Thursday, October 19, a British Airways captain and co-pilot were sent to the hospital after they inhaled a "foul odour" and became ill in the cockpit.
After reporting the offensive smell on Thursday morning while the plane was at 30,000 feet in the air, the captain and first officer of a BA flight were obliged to use oxygen masks.
After taking off from Newcastle and making contact with emergency personnel on the ground, the plane carrying passengers made a landing at Heathrow Airport.
Fearing they may have been exposed to harmful chemicals, the pair was taken directly to the hospital after 'keeling over'.
In response to the dramatic cockpit event, ambulances and fire departments sped to the airline's Crew Report Centre, where the two pilots were initially evaluated after experiencing "smoke inhalation."
They took them to a hospital for additional examinations.
The Sun quoted a source as saying: "This was a horrible incident. The two pilots are the apparent cause of worry right now.
But what's equally alarming is the concern over what may have happened if these two cockpit crew members had been intoxicated while still in charge of a crowded jet at 25,000 feet. It is not worth considering.
Investigations into this worrisome situation have begun.
Following a small mechanical issue with the aircraft, the flight landed safely, and passengers departed normally, according to a British Airways representative.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: 'We were called at 10.39am today (19 October) to reports of an incident at Terminal 5 Heathrow Airport, Hounslow.
'We sent an ambulance crew, an incident response officer, and members of our hazardous area response team (HART) to the scene.
We treated two patients at the scene for smoke inhalation and took them to a local hospital.'
