Akasa Air's Boeing 737 MAX diverted to Mumbai after a passenger bomb threat

 

Due to a bomb threat, Akasa Air Flight QP1148, which was flying between Pune (PNQ) and Delhi (DEL), was diverted to Mumbai (BOM). During the flight, one passenger said he had a bomb in his luggage. Less than an hour after takeoff, the plane made an emergency landing. All passengers and staff were unharmed, and the incident is being investigated by authorities.


Akasa Air’s diverted flight


Following a bomb threat by a passenger, Akasa Air Flight QP1148, operating on a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft (Registration VT-YAO), made an emergency landing in BOM on October 20. 


FlightRadar24.com data showed that the aircraft took off from PNQ at 00:06 local time, slightly behind schedule. When the tragedy occurred, the flight was carrying 185 passengers on its way to Delhi. According to one passenger on the flight,


The flight crew followed airline safety procedures by diverting the plane for an emergency landing. Before landing, the plane flew level at 8,000 feet (2,440 meters) towards Mumbai.


According to an official statement published in Outlook by Akasa Air,


“Akasa Air flight QP 1148, flying from Pune to Delhi at 12.07 am on October 21, 2023, and carrying 185 passengers and six crew members on board, received a security alert shortly after take-off. As per safety and security procedures, the plane was diverted to Mumbai. The Captain followed all required emergency procedures and landed safely at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at 12:42 am.”


When the plane touched down in Mumbai, a Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads (BDDS) squad was deployed to the scene. The team investigated the passenger's bag right away, but nothing was found. Law enforcement officers also arrived on the scene. 


“The CISF [Central Industrial Security Force] officer informed the Mumbai Police Control about the incident at around 2.30 am after which the luggage of the passenger of that flight was searched. The BDDS team as well as police officers were also present there. But during the investigation, the police did not find any suspicious object there.”
