On that fateful Saturday, September 16, 2023, the Aermacchi MB-339 jet was in the sky, rehearsing for the Italian Air Force's grand centennial celebration. Something went amiss, and the jet started to dip in altitude.
Little did the young girl know, that her journey with her family on a quaint country road would take a tragic turn. She was in a car with her parents and her 9-year-old brother when their vehicle was suddenly swallowed by the fiery explosion from the crashing plane.
Her brother is now battling severe burn injuries at the Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital in Turin. Their parents, too, suffered from the flames.
An onlooker managed to capture the heart-wrenching moment on video, showing Captain Oscar Del Do, the pilot, narrowly escaping by ejecting from the aircraft and deploying his parachute. Thankfully, he survived and is currently receiving medical attention.
Gossip is rife with talk of a possible bird strike just after the squadron lifted off from Turin Airport. The crash's impact echoed within the airport's boundaries.
In the wake of this devastating event, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her shock, particularly at the Caselle Flying Club in Turin.
She mournfully said, “The loss of young Laura Origliasso due to such a horrifying crash involving our National Acrobatic Team deeply grieves me. Words fail me." She continued to convey her heartfelt sympathies and well wishes, stating, "On behalf of the government and myself, our hearts go out to the grieving family. We're keeping the injured parents and brave little brother in our thoughts, praying for their swift recovery."
