Pilot captures 'terrible' turbulence on video and offers tips for staying calm

Picture this: You're heading off on your honeymoon, and then WHAM! The plane starts shaking like it's in the middle of a dance-off. That's exactly what happened to Jimmy Nicholson, a Sydney-based pilot, who happened to be on vacation mode with his new wife.

They were jetting off from Italy to Barcelona to celebrate their honeymoon.

Jimmy, being the ever-vigilant pilot, even when off-duty, decided to record the intense turbulence. The video? Well, it's not for the faint-hearted.

The Airbus plane they were on was shaking so much that passengers were letting out terrified screams.

"I've been through a lot of turbulence in my career, but this? It's right up there with the worst," Jimmy shared. He also mentioned, "It was a short flight, but not exactly the comfy experience we hoped for."

The footage even caught his wife looking pretty distressed. At one point, she was reaching for that all-too-familiar sickness bag. Yikes!

But Jimmy wasn’t just filming for the thrill of it. He shared some wisdom to help fellow passengers stay calm during such nerve-wracking episodes.

He suggested, "Whenever you're nervous, remember, turbulence is pretty normal. The plane isn't just gonna drop out of the blue."

@jimmy_nicholson Horrible turbulence on our flight today. Im a Pilot and actually fly this aircaft type (Airbus). Here’s why you have nothing to worry about #pilot #turbulence ♬ original sound - Jimmy Nicholson

Oh, and he also showed this neat water bottle trick. If you're holding a water bottle and the water inside isn’t dancing too much, you’re actually doing okay. Another tip? Crank up the air conditioning or open the vent above you and try peeking out the window. Distraction can be a good ally!

And if you're wondering where's the worst place to sit during such a shake-up, Jimmy and his wife can vouch for the back seats.

Apparently, that's where you feel the bumps the most.

Jimmy tried to explain what might've caused the rough ride, "Sometimes, there are widespread storms. Pilots just find the best route through." And for those still worried? He reassured,

"No biggie! Planes are designed to handle way more than this."

After the plane settled, the next clip showed passengers erupting in relieved applause. Jimmy? He was all smiles, saying, "Now that deserved a round of applause! The pilots truly earned every penny today."

A little tidbit for the curious: Jimmy and his wife first crossed paths during the 2021 season of The Bachelor in Australia. Who knew their journey together would involve such literal ups and downs? 😉
