BA Boeing 777 windshield 'cracks' mid-air as flight forced to return to London Gatwick

A British Airways flight traveling over the Atlantic returned to London-Gatwick Airport (LGW), reportedly due to a crack developing in the windscreen.

The windscreen of a British Airways flight that had been flying over the Atlantic Ocean apparently developed a crack, prompting the return of the aircraft to London-Gatwick Airport (LGW).

On Monday, August 21, 2023 at 11:09 a.m. local time, the Boeing 777-200ER left for Orlando Airport (MCO), but after only a few hours, the plane was compelled to do a U-turn.

After four and a half hours of flight, the G-VIIU aircraft, which was scheduled to land in the US at 3 o'clock, instead landed back at Gatwick.

The 24-year-old jet's passengers disembarked, and the aircraft was taken away for inspection.

G-VIIU took a flight to Vieux Fort Hewanorra Airport (UVF) in St. Lucia after an overnight stay at LGW.

“Our pilots returned to London Gatwick as a precaution due to a minor technical issue, and the aircraft landed normally. We’ve apologized to customers for the disruption to their journey and our teams are working hard to get them on their way as soon as possible,” British Airways said in a statement.

The true cause of the shattered windscreen is still a mystery. @FlightEmergency provided the initial information about the incident.
