Boeing’s Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) company, Wisk Aero, has performed the first-ever public demonstration of a fully autonomous eVTOL fixed-wing aircraft.
The first-ever public demonstration of a completely autonomous eVTOL fixed-wing aircraft was carried out by Wisk Aero, a subsidiary of Boeing's Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) division.
On July 25, 2023, enthralled crowds assembled at the EAA AirVenture Airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin (US) saw the historic occurrence.
Although the eVTOL developer is working on certification for the Generation 6 air taxi, the display was conducted by Wisk's Generation 5 aircraft.
“Congratulations to our entire team for the incredible effort that went into making this happen! More details to come,” Wisk Aero wrote on Twitter.
Wisk Aero has concentrated on a fully autonomous aircraft rather than one that is piloted because they think that self-driving cars will be the foundation of the industry's future.
Brian Yutko, CEO of Wisk, claimed that autonomy remains the objective and that he anticipates Wisk will achieve it and obtain certification by the end of this decade in a media interview at the Paris Air Show in June 2023.
“There is no Plan B,” stated Yutko confidently.
In a video taken of the demonstration, the Wisk air taxi can be seen flying forward and rotating while hovering in the air.
The Californian start-up will become a fully owned subsidiary of Boeing, it was revealed on May 31, 2023.
Boeing had previously been one of two shareholders, the other was the AAM startup Kittyhawk.
In 2019, Wisk Aero was established as a joint venture between Boeing and Larry Page's Kitty Hawk Corporation. Kitty Hawk Corporation is the parent company of Google.
Boeing contributed around half a billion dollars to the self-flying electric air taxi developer in 2022.
Wisk flew their pilotless Gen 5 aircraft at Oshkosh today.
