On July 17, 2023, an emergency slide reportedly fell into a residential neighborhood in Chicago, prompting the local police to be called to look into the incident.
The evacuation slide from a plane that had arrived from Zurich Airport (ZRH) was missing, which was discovered by workers at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), the FAA confirmed. This is how the FAA first learned about the issue.
“Maintenance workers at Chicago O’Hare International Airport discovered an emergency slide was missing from a United Airlines Boeing 767 (UAL Flight 12) that had just landed safely from Switzerland,” FAA told NBC.
After a nine-hour flight from the European capital, the Boeing 767, designated N666UA, touched down in Chicago at 12:29 local time.

155 passengers and 10 crew members were on board the 24-year-old aircraft, said United Airlines.
The emergency slide may be faintly seen descending to the ground in security camera footage just after a distant airplane passes by.
“We immediately contacted the FAA and are working with our team to better understand the circumstances around this matter,” United said.
In an emergency, the inflatable evacuation slide is intended to enable passengers to leave the aircraft.
