Unfortunate Events: A passenger on a LATAM Boeing 777 dies

 Following a death onboard during the outbound leg, the LATAM 777 flight returning to São Paulo had to divert to Lisbon as well.

LATAM's Boeing 777-300ER has experienced some difficulties recently. According to one source, the plane from São Paulo to London declared an emergency, and following flight data showed the plane diverting via Lisbon on the way back to São Paulo. Here is what happened.

The initial event

A LATAM-operated Boeing 777-300ER carrying flight LA8084 departed São Paulo (GRU) for London Heathrow (LHR) shortly after midnight on July 7. According to Aviation Source News, the plane squawked 7700 (Mayday) as it passed over the west of France and an emergency was declared while it was en route to London Heathrow.

Although the emergency's nature was initially unknown, the plane safely landed at Heathrow at 14:38 local time. This was notable about half an hour earlier than its scheduled arrival time, avoiding the need to enter a holding pattern, which is typical for planes landing at the busiest airport in the UK.

Responding on July 8th, a spokesperson stated:

"LATAM Airlines Brazil informs that it was necessary to request medical assistance upon arrival of flight LA8084 (São Paulo/Guarulhos-London) after a passenger became ill on board. The medical team promptly performed all necessary procedures, but unfortunately, the passenger died."
