NATO's Baltic Air Policing Mission, a revolving mission designed to safeguard Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian airspace, has established itself as a crucial component of the alliance's collective defense plan.

NATO's Baltic Air Policing Mission is being carried out at Amari Airbase by the 140 Expeditionary Air Wing (EAW) of the Royal Air Force (RAF) till August 2023.

When the Baltic States joined NATO in 2004, the operation got underway. As these nations lack their own airborne capabilities, protecting Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian airspace from invasions is one of the principal responsibilities of NATO's rotating air units.

In response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the French Air Force actively took part in NATO Air Shielding, an expanded deployment. As part of NATO's Enhanced Vigilance Activities (EVA) mission, France dispatched two Dassault Rafale fighters to Poland on February 24, 2022, only hours after Russia started its invasion of Ukraine. Since then, French fighters have maintained a continuous airspace patrol over Poland.
