Taiwan’s Minister of National Defense Chiu Kuo-cheng addressed rumors regarding the transfer of decommissioned Hawk anti-aircraft missiles to the United States, with the intention of subsequently donating them to Ukraine.
Chiu Kuo-cheng, Taiwan's Minister of National Defence, responded to rumors that deactivated Hawk anti-aircraft missiles were being transferred to the US with plans to donate them to Ukraine later.
On July 18, 2023, Chiu was questioned by media following a parliamentary hearing and categorically refuted the allegations.
The missiles, which are still in the care of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, will be disposed of in accordance with the established protocols for decommissioned military equipment, according to the ministry.
Chiu emphasized that correct scrapping standards would be followed while handling these missiles, guaranteeing their appropriate destruction.
The minister's reaction comes in the midst of rumors regarding what will happen to the retired missiles.
Up to 100 Hawk missiles would be handed to the United States, according to a July 14, 2023 report from the Taiwanese news outlet China Times.
The minister also addressed Taiwan's plan to purchase the NASAMS Type 2 National Advanced Surface-to-Air Defence Missile System from the US.
As proof of the system's excellent performance and prospective significance for the country's defense capabilities, Chiu cited Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Eight NASAMS have still been sent to Ukraine in an effort to strengthen airspace defence.
The minister underlined that no official agreement has yet been reached despite admitting the system's efficiency.
