Diamond Aircraft’s all-electric eDA40 completes its first flight.

Diamond Aircraft announced that it has successfully completed the first flight of its eDA40 electric aircraft.

The eDA40 electric aircraft from Diamond Aircraft successfully completed its first flight, according to the company.

The well-known DA40 light aircraft, one of the best-selling piston aircraft, is used by flying schools and private owners all over the world. The eDA40 is an all-electric, battery-powered variant of this model.

On July 26, 2023, the eDA40 made its first flight over the company's headquarters in Wiener Neustadt, Austria. Sören Pedersen, the head of flight testing for Diamond, carried out a number of system checks and executed fundamental manoeuvres during the flight.

“The aircraft performed outstandingly well during its maiden flight and not only met but exceeded all our expectations,” said Diamond CEO, Liqun (Frank) Zhang.

A Safran ENGINeUS electric motor and an Electric Power Systems (EPS) battery module power the eDA40.

Up to 90 minutes of flight autonomy are anticipated, with a 20-minute DC rapid charging technology charging the battery from empty to full. The operational costs of the eDA40, according to Diamond Aircraft, will be 40% lower than those of a standard piston engine aircraft of comparable size.

The Austrian manufacturer is requesting Part 23 certification for the eDA40 from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

The public unveiling of the aircraft will occur during the AERO Friedrichshafen 2024 air show in the city in southern Germany city in April 2024
