Woman (37) passes away after struggling to rescue her son from sea.

Boy (10), who had been swimming near Ballycotton in east Cork, saved himself by making his way to rocks near shore

Garda have verified that a 37-year-old woman passed away in the hospital this afternoon after having trouble saving her ten-year-old kid from drowning in the sea off of east Cork.

The event occurred just before noon when the child encountered trouble while swimming off Ballycroneen Beach in east Cork, which is located between Ballycotton and Churchtown South.

The mother of the youngster dove into the water to try to save her son, but she got into trouble herself, setting off the alarm, and the boy was able to climb onto some rocks close to the shore.

The Austin Lidbury, an all-weather lifeboat operated by the Ballycotton RNLI, was launched and quickly arrived at the scene which was positioned in the water to the east of Ballycotton.

In a rescue effort coordinated by the Irish Coast Guard Marine Rescue Coordination Center in Valentia, the Ballycotton RNLI crew was able to locate the woman and bring her back to Ballycotton Pier.

The boy was plucked from the rocks and brought to Ballycotton Pier by the Irish Coast Guard's Rescue 117 helicopter out of Waterford.

Her son, who wasn't gravely hurt, was transferred to CUH by ambulance to be evaluated while the helicopter airlifted the mother, who was in a critical condition, to the hospital.

Along with the Irish Coast Guard Search and Rescue teams from Ballycotton and Guileen, the Crosshaven RNLI Inshore Lifeboat contributed to the effort, and the garda were also made aware of the incident.

The woman, who was born in Poland but had spent many years residing in Cloyne with her family, passed away late this afternoon at Cork University Hospital, according to Garda

According to local Fine Gael Cllr. Michael Hegarty, the community was horrified and saddened by the news of the tragedy, and people's thoughts and prayers are with the woman's family at this difficult time.

“It’s very very sad – the family are originally from Poland but they were well settled here in the community, so our thoughts and prayers are with them but also with their family back in Poland,” he said.

“It’s very tough on the young lad but the local community will not be found wanting when it comes to rallying around and giving him all the support it can – our thoughts and prayers are with them all.”
