Next-generation scanners will put an end to the 100ml liquid rule.
The amount of liquids allowed in hand luggage at Helsinki Airport has been increased to two liters. The airport has modern, computer tomography-based security scanners installed, joining other airports in Europe in removing the 100mL restriction.
Helsinki will permit 2L of liquids.
As of June 28th, passengers at Helsinki Airport (HEL) will be permitted to bring up to two liters of liquids in hand luggage, according to Finavia, the company that oversees airports throughout Finland. Currently, passengers cannot transport drinks, liquid foods, or larger cosmetic items past security because the maximum amount of liquid containers allowed in hand luggage is 100ml (or 0.1L).
Finavia Security Manager Ari Kumara commented,
"Travelling through Helsinki Airport will become even easier as of 28 June. More modern security control equipment has been installed at the airport. Thanks to this, we can now allow the transport of liquid containers larger than one hundred milliliters, such as one-liter water bottles and other larger containers, in hand baggage."
New scanners and security lanes
Finavia started the first stage of its security project in the summer of 2022, revamping the security zone at HEL and installing eight new security lanes with brand-new scanners. The new scanners removed the need for travelers to remove liquids and devices from their luggage, shortening up security lines and improving the passenger experience. The maximum liquid container size remained at 100ml.
With the inauguration of two extra security lanes and the start-up of all 10 lanes this month, the second and final phase was finished. The increased liquid allowances only apply to departures at Helsinki Airport and not other airports in the country under Finavia's control or for transfer passengers in Helsinki.
Kumara added,
"When it comes to service development, Finavia is a pioneer in its industry. It is important for us to serve our passengers as well as possible and provide air passengers with a pleasant airport experience. We believe that with this new technology, we can offer our passengers a smoother and more relaxed start to their journey."
