A 52-year-old pilot tragically died after his gyrocopter crashed into a high-tension power line and caught alight in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.
In Australia's New South Wales (NSW), a 52-year-old gyrocopter pilot tragically perished after colliding with a high-tension power wire and catching fire.
An autogyro, commonly referred to as a gyrocopter, is a type of light aircraft that employs a propeller and an unpowered rotor rotating freely to provide lift. It usually flies at slower speeds and cannot hover or change altitude quickly.
Nearly three gyroplane incidents per year result in fatalities, according to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA).
The accident happened on June 26, 2023, at a remote property in Tilpa town, 191 kilometers southwest of Bourke, according to NSW Police.
Although emergency services were dispatched, the pilot di£d at the scene of the collision.
The circumstances surrounding the fatal collision were the subject of an inquiry by officers from the Central North Police District. There are no indications, though, that the incident was anything other than a tragic accident at this time.
A similar accident occurred on November 27, 2022, a small aircraft in Maryland, United States, collided with a power line tower, causing a power outage that affected more than 85,000 residents. Fortunately, the pilot didn't sustain any significant wounds.
In many low-flying accidents, wire hits are to blame. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warns that these lines would not always be obvious and might even be nearly impossible to discern in some circumstances.
