A US Air Force (USAF) F-35A Lightning II fighter jet intercepted a Mooney M20J single-engine plane over San Francisco Bay Area on June 21, 2023, due to violations of temporary flight restrictions during President Joe Biden’s visit.
On June 21, 2023, during President Joe Biden's visit, a Mooney M20J single-engine aircraft was caught by a US Air Force (USAF) F-35A Lightning II fighter jet for violating temporary flight restrictions.
The fighter jet performed a maneuver known as a "headbutt" to divert the aircraft over Marin County from its course. The maneuver, which is intended to warn pilots about airspace limits, is not an allusion to the similarly named aggressive strategy, but rather a visual cue for the pilot to recognize the airspace infringement and alter course.
North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) acknowledged in a statement sent to their Twitter account that USAF fighters responded to many infractions of the VIP Temporary Flight Restricted (TFR) region during Biden's three-day visit to San Francisco.
“Pilots in the San Francisco area are strongly encouraged to check NOTAMs [Notice to Air Missions] today and tomorrow to ensure they have the latest information on the VIP TFR,” NORAD reminded in a following tweet.
TFRs are a standard practice that are applied based on the President's schedule and location. TFRs may also be put into effect by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in times of emergency or national security, large sporting events, and natural catastrophes.
TFR infractions can result in harsh punishments, including perhaps being charged criminally and facing up to a year in federal jail and a $100,000 fine. Offenders may also experience other civil penalties or have their pilot's license suspended.
